Description:

A short term (3 to 6 month) Transitional Independent Living program for people with Acquired Brain Injury, Developmental Disability, or degenerative illness and severe mental illness (SMI) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) who are being diverted from or are “stepping down” from a Virginia State Hospital for Behavioral Health. Participants must be able to walk up and down stairs, bathe, dress, and feed themselves independently and safely. Up to 5 people can live in this person-centered therapeutic environment to prepare for independent living or living in a more integrated community setting. House guests participate in the BIRST Day Program. Psychiatric Care provided by Western Tidewater Community Services Board.  For Adults.

Criteria for diversion bed:

    • In or nearing crisis and have had a state  psychiatric stay in the last 12 months, 
        • or
      • be TDO'd and waiting on a state psychiatric bed and may be diverted by supportive residential services
        • or
      • have had a private hospitalization in the last 12 months but had been identified on the state hospital waitlist at the time of that admission. 
      • Or
      • Individual has been admitted to the state facility from jail and is identified to return to jail however at jail discharge could benefit from transitional housing.  The need transitional housing must be identified while hospitalized.
