Gratitude and Hope

Gratitude & hope

The holidays are upon us! As we prepare for good food and celebrations with loved ones, it’s also the season of giving! Over the last year, BIAV supporters have rallied for us in so many ways and we are forever grateful.

Gratitude is not always easy. Anyone affected by brain injury knows the transitions after an injury are difficult. It can be hard to find things to be grateful for in the hard times. According to gratitude researcher Robert Emmons, “It is under crisis conditions when we have the most to gain by a grateful perspective on life. In the face of demoralization, gratitude has the power to energize. In the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal. In the face of despair, gratitude has the power to bring hope. In other words, gratitude can help us cope with hard times.”

This isn’t an easy practice. There is a difference between feeling grateful and being grateful. We don’t have total control over our emotions, but being grateful is a choice! “Gratitude provides a perspective where we can view life in its entirety and not get overwhelmed by temporary circumstances. Yes, this perspective is hard to achieve-but my research says it is worth the effort” – Robert Emmons.

In good times and bad BIAV is grateful to everyone who supports us. From participating in our 2022 Phone a Friend Advocacy Day, to our donors and sponsors, to the hundreds of callers to our Information and Referral line, we are so grateful to be there for you. We are grateful to provide help, healing, and hope.
