Most of us are aware of the controversy surrounding concussions and football players, but concussions and other forms of traumatic brain injury aren’t limited to football players. Unfortunately, symptoms of mild brain injury can be subtle and may be misdiagnosed; sometimes the diagnosis is missed altogether. Brain injury and mental health are often confused as being the same thing; in reality, they are distinct chronic health conditions and one is a risk factor for the other. An April article in the American Journal of Psychiatry, revealed that in the largest study yet to investigate the link, even a single mild brain injury increases the risk of later mental illness, especially if the injury occurs during adolescence.
