About Us

For 38 years, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) has been the only state-wide resource for brain injury information, resources, advocacy, education, and outreach. Our mission is to advance education, awareness, support, treatment and research to improve the quality of life for all people affected by brain injury. Our office is made up of diverse, passionate, and forward-thinking staff members who work collaboratively to solve problems and empower the people we serve. BIAV is searching for an intern who will work with our team on a variety of marketing and development projects during the summer break.

About You

We are seeking an intern who is creative, motivated, outgoing, interested in working with a non-profit, and has a desire to learn marketing and development. This internship can be customized to fit your interests, abilities, and needs.

*No prior experience in brain injury services is required


  • June/July – August/September
  • 20-25 hours per week (days are flexible) 

Expectations (can be adapted to fit applicants’ availability and needs)

  • Unpaid 
  • Start time determined upon hire


  • Main BIAV office in Richmond, VA; however, we are open to a remote internship for the right candidate

Tasks (may include, but are not limited to)

  • Event Logistics/Fundraising Charity Golf Tournament (60%):
    • In collaboration with the Development and Operations Manager, develop and execute communication strategy for soliciting raffle prize donors and hole sponsors
    • Email/call vendors to request raffle item donation(s) and hole sponsorships
    • Develop written and oral presentations to pitch BIAV as a great organization to support
    • Follow-up with vendors and potential sponsorships
    • Send thank-you’s to event donors
  • Social Media (20%)
    • Create strategic content to spread event info/sponsorship opportunities using social media and email communications
    • Assist in planning and brainstorming for BIAV’s Giving Tuesday campaign
  • Write/edit fundraising documents to encourage more donations (10%)
    • BIAV Case Statement
    • Planned Giving Case Statement
  • Grant/Funding Research (10%)
    • Using available online grant search engines, explore potential funding opportunities


  • Acquire knowledge and increase understanding of nonprofit marketing/development
  • Gain hands-on experience in event planning, social media curation, and marketing
  • Strengthen leadership, collaboration, and writing skills

Intern Requirements 

  • At least a second-year student pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, business administration, or similar field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent at meeting deadlines
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Keen interest in event planning
  • Exceptional research, writing, editing and proof-reading skills
  • Ability to work independently once tasks are assigned
  • Strong time management skills
  • Creative and detail-oriented

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
