{"id":27994,"date":"2024-09-18T18:40:04","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T22:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biav.net\/?post_type=advanced-library&#038;p=27994"},"modified":"2024-09-19T02:01:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T06:01:37","slug":"ten-self-advocacy-tips","status":"publish","type":"advanced-library","link":"https:\/\/www.biav.net\/es\/advanced-library\/ten-self-advocacy-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten Self Advocacy Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Self-advocacy means knowing your rights, speaking up for yourself, and making your own decisions.<br>Self-advocacy can be more difficult if you have a brain injury so it is important to practice these skills.<br>This document provides 10 tips you can use in everyday life situations including doctor\u2019s appointments,<br>receiving services, or social encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write important things down or capture information on your device. For example, what are your<br>goals, concerns, requests?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know your rights \u2013 do research or ask someone to help you find this information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare in advance \u2013 document and role play.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep records \u2013 medical records, leases, bills, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for what you need \u2013 do you need extra time for an appointment? Paper copy of a<br>document? Extra reminders? Ask.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm your understanding \u2013 repeat your notes back to make sure both parties are on the<br>same page. If you don\u2019t understand something, ask for clarification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a peer group to practice with \u2013 no one understands what you are going through quite like<br>someone with the same lived experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get comfortable being uncomfortable \u2013 sometimes standing up for yourself means saying \u201cno\u201d<br>or disagreeing with someone. The other person may not like what you have to say and that is ok<br>as long as both of you are respectful and listen to each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problem solve \u2013 work with the other person to come up with solutions or compromises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Value your worth \u2013 your opinions, desires, and needs are just as important as anyone else\u2019s.<br>Keep a positive mindset and remind yourself of this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Content last reviewed: June 2021<br>This article is provided for informational and educational purposes only.
