The Brain Injury Association of Virginia’s (BIAV) public awareness
campaign for Brain Injury Awareness Month focused on sports concussion.
The campaign was multifaceted and involved a lot of work by a great many
partners. It included public service announcements (PSA’s), an
aggressive effort to get related stories covered by local media, and
collaboration with our network of support groups, state agencies, and
community based brain injury programs to disseminate sports concussion
posters and fact sheets.
The PSA’s emphasize early identification and proper management of sports
concussion. We had student athletes, parents, and a physician share
compelling stories of their experience with concussions; special thanks
go to our “talent”: Ann Gill, Peter Mancuso, Jody Power, Rylie Power,
Tim Dustan, and Dr. Mike Petrizzi.
Dr. Greg O’Shanick, Medical Director of the Brain Injury Association of
America (BIAA); Emily Krause of Allen and Allen; Mary Ann Rayment; and
Park Group Productions provided valuable in-kind contributions of
financial and technical assistance in the development and production of
these materials.
This campaign was funded in part by grant #10-003A from the Virginia
Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS). The Virginia Department of
Health (VDH) funded the air time for the Brain Injury Prevention Public
Service Announcements. (For more information about the prevention of
brain injuries visit www.PreventInjuriesVA.com.)
The contents of the PSA’s are the sole responsibility of the BIAV and do
not necessarily represent the official views of DRS or VDH.
